While Ford was referring to the organization of his day, organizations today face new challenges and find new meaning in his words. First, organizations today must accommodate a more inclusive and engaged workforce. Hierarchical structures must adapt to changing expectations about employee involvement in organizational priorities and decisions. Second, organizations today can no longer operate independently of the people and places they affect. Accountability, transparency, and engagement are increasingly vital to an organization’s reputation and effectiveness. Third, organizational goals are intertwined with the goals of other organizations. Organizations represent parts of complex systems that, now more than ever, must move forward together to accomplish their goals. This is especially true of organizations that value social responsibility, inclusion, and resilience. The interconnectedness of the modern world requires us to expand the meaning of Ford’s sentiment to include not only the organization but the sphere in which it operates. Thoughtful, intelligent, and meaningful collaboration holds that promise.

 

Todd Bryan + Associates is a small, highly specialized training,coaching, and consulting firm that helps public and non-profit organizations enhance collaborative skills and practices and build organizational cultures that enable them to operate more effectively in the modern world. TB+A also helps progressive industries that recognize the value of collaboration and wish to work more cooperatively with the people and places they affect.

TB+A is led by Dr. Todd Bryan, a nationally recognized expert and practitioner in mediation, facilitation, and collaboration. His training, coaching and consulting credentials span more than 20 years and include tailored workshops and facilitated retreats for public and non-profit organizations and progressive companies. He is currently an adjunct faculty member at the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Michigan. In addition, he taught for almost 20 years in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver, where his courses were consistently the most popular in the school’s curriculum.
